H1 tag

The H1 tag is the most important heading on your page. It matters for SEO, and it matters for your visitors. The H1 is usually the first thing a visitor reads on a page, so it decides whether they keep reading.
Your H1 has to cover what the page is about and make people want to read the rest.
Google also pays extra attention to your H1. Having your keywords in it is a small ranking factor, so it helps decide how well your page can be found.

What does an H1 tag look like?

An H1 tag looks like this:

<h1>This is the h1 tag</h1>

How headings relate to the text and to each other

The other headings are h2 to h6. You use them to give your page structure, and Google can read that structure. By putting headings in the right order, you show how the sections of your page relate to each other. Headings work in layers. A heading that sits under another heading is called a subheading. An example shows best how this works:

<h1>My topic</h1>
<p>My introduction paragraph</p>

    <h2>My first subheading</h2>
<p>The paragraph that belongs to my first subheading</p>

    <h2>My second subheading</h2>
<p>The paragraph that belongs to my second subheading</p>

        <h3>The sub-subheading</h3>
<p>This text relates to the second subheading, but not to the first</p>

<h5>This heading is in completely the wrong place</h5>
